Leadership and Leadership Styles Essay

Leadership, influencing other to willing do the work of an organization so that the objectives can be met. The main objective for any organization is to meet it’s goals. To do this you will need one major component in place, that is management. Management comes in and organizes the entire operation of the organization. You take it a step further when leadership comes in to place. An organization could not exist if it where not for the leaders.
It is not only important to have the title or the position of being a leader but it would also be important for the leader to be effect so that his followers will follow his leadership. To do this as a leader you will need to have certain skill and abilities. For example a good leader, will have the ability of acting as a leader. A leader is suppose to be able to motivate the employees, and communicate effectively in difference of the barriers that exist, he will organize teams, and be held accountable for supervising the team, and he most be able to manage organizational and cultural changes that are needed to improve the organization. Leaders have power and certain traits, the leader should have a vision for the where the organization will go, the leader should actually think as a leader would. A leader should have six personal traits. They should have the drive to achieve, and the desire to lead. He is confident in his decisions and knows what it take for the organization to meet its goals, he knows the business well, he displays integrity and honest in doing business and with his subordinates. Most important the leader will need to have the right leadership style in order to stand and be an effective leader. Leadership style is the behavior in which the leader has chosen to be, he will display certain values and a certain attitude. Classical Management Theorists Essay

The advent of mass production, in the period during and following the Industrial Revolution in Europe and the United States, brought novel approaches and ideas as to how organisations were best managed.

The Classical School of management is thought to have originated around the turn of the century and dominated management thinking into the 1920s. It focused on the efficiency of the particular work process, and has been divided into three schools of thought. These include Bureaucratic management that focuses on rules and procedures, Scientific management which concentrates on the ‘best’ way in which a job can be done and Administrative management which has emphasised the need for the flow of information within the organisation.

Classical theorists considered workers and their needs as being secondary to the needs of the organisation and hence it has become an outdated form of management. Despite being outdated classical management theory remains of interest as it introduced management as a subject for analysis and provided ideas for the future development of management theory.

In this analysis Bureaucratic, Scientific and Administrative management theory will be evaluated and their contribution to our understanding of today’s organisations discussed.

Conflict Management Style Essay

Conflict occurs in every company whenever there is a difference of opinion or a personality conflict exists between two people. When handled incorrectly, conflict everyone one in an organization from a subordinate to the executive director could be affected. Disagreements occur among employees for various reasons, such as differences of opinion, values, goals or work ethic. Managers in organizations must handle each situation differently. Based on the assigned readings, the workbook assignment, and my personal interactions with management and staff, I will discuss the conflict management styles used by managers within Arc Human Services, Inc (ARC).

Currently, I work as a human resources generalist at ARC. Through my three years of employment with ARC, I have observed the different styles of conflict management. As part of the management team, I must be able to deal with conflict on a day-to-day basis. Conflict is inevitable within any organization.

Upper management of ARC has different styles of conflict management that it utilizes amongst its staff. The Chief Financial Officer of ARC, Joe Scrip, utilizes avoidance as a conflict management style. When a disagreement occurs within the accounting department, he pretends the conflict does not exist. He hopes with time the disagreement will eventually go away. Avoidance is not a practical style of managing conflict. The underlying tension within the department never really goes away.

The human resources director of ARC, Mary Bruno, utilizes the collaboration style of conflict management. As the director of human resources, Mary is able to listen to both sides of a disagreement and distinguish the best course of action that needs to be taken. She bases her decision upon what is best for the organization. Ultimately, Mary’s goal is to solve the problem by raising all of the relevant issues and openly discussing the issues with the parties involved. The final result is a win-win situation amongst the employees that the conflict involved.

Management Concepts Essay

A work group or team provides the forum within which people interact, develop relationships and a common approach and goals emerge. Before a team is able to fulfil its tasks it must go through the stages of development where there tasks will be completed. There Tuckman (1965) believed in four stages of team development, forming storming, norming and performing. Although these stages are clearly defined by Tuckman(1965) and Dwyer (2001) there is no clear definition of these steps and the process can sometimes find itself being repeated. However the steps that all teams must go through in order future develop in the forming stage. If the correct management style is implemented in these stages than there can be increase in the groups overall efficiency and performance. There are many suggested managerial styles however this essay will focus on dominating, obliging, integrating and avoiding.

This stage occurs when a team is established and the team members begin to interact. While this stage is characterized by uncertainty relating to teams purpose, structure and leadership, the members of this team find themselves testing there behaviour to see what is acceptable. This can be done on a conscience or unconscious level where the team members may find themselves doing this process instinctively rather than premeditated. This will occur in a highly structured team with clear rules laid down within this team. Within a highly structured team members will also begin to establish the real purpose of the team. Often this real purpose of the team will differ from its apparent purpose. In a team that does not follow this highly structured team style, members will place great importance on attaching to the groups leader as members look for the support, guidance and direction. Although there are two types of teams, highly structured and laissez-faire, both will place a strong premium on setting out task responsibility and deadlines (Barrick & Mount, 1991). In this early stage of development, there is also a clear lack of openness or willingness to divulge or reveal emotions between team members.

Functions of Management Essay

Most successful businesses are guided by the basic philosophy that every action taken by the business should translate into a benefit to the bottom line, or increase in profit. To this end, the company at which I am employed (we’ll call it AFL) is the world leader in automotive wiring harnesses and follows this philosophy religiously. As an example, each year in our president’s policies outline is a goal for management improvement. Our president defined our management strategy as “Establish company-wide Performance Management and measure effectiveness of improvement training initiatives” (George Herman, 2003). Performance Management is a web-based system to assist in managing the four functions of business management: planning, organizing, leading and controlling. This paper will discuss how these four functions of management apply to AFL, to my direct supervision and to my position at AFL.

At AFL, Performance Management is a new system to improve the quality of the data presented to management, improve delivery timing and documentation of events and milestones. The Performance Management system covers the four functions of management. Planning, which is a separate department in YNA, is responsible for the “make or buy” and “production location” decisions. The decisions made by the planning department can determine and effect the producing of parts anywhere in the world. Organizing, again a separate department at AFL called Program Management, is monitored by skilled managers tracking the progress of new product development projects. Organizing also means that the program management department has a vital role in effectively communicating information within AFL and to our customers. Leading is a function of management that is not departmental at AFL. Rather, leadership is business unit based. What this means is that decisions affecting the customer will be made at a level that takes into account all the information available along with the entire needs of the customer. At AFL, this level of leadership and decision-making is at the business unit director level. This may sound like a lofty level for decisions affecting the customer, but AFL is a customer-focused company that is driven to delight the customer. This level of management leadership has served as a recipe for success for AFL. These four functions of management, from an organizational standpoint, create the direction of and support to the supervisor level of management at AFL.
